Thousands of people across the United States have reported getting an email similar to this one that says “Your social security number has been used for illegal purposes and will be suspended” unless you call the toll-free number. This is a scam.
There are several obvious clues that this is a scam, the first being there is no such thing as suspending or cancelling a social security number. Also, any communication from a legitimate government agency will have a dot-gov email address.
The United States Social Security Administration says, “Scammers are pretending to be government employees. They may threaten you and may demand immediate payment to avoid arrest or other legal action. These criminals continue to evolve and find new ways to steal your money and personal information. Do not fall for it!”
The Social Security Administration states:
The United States Social Security Administration only send emails or text messages if you have opted in to receive them and only in limited situations, including the following:
- When you have subscribed with Social Security to receive updates and notifications by text or email.
- As part of Social Security’s enhanced security when accessing your personal my Social Security account.
They may email or text you about programs and services but will never ask for a return call to an unknown number or ask for personal information.
