If Georgia Power gets its way, the Georgia Public Service Commission will allow the utility company to hike customer’s rates 12%.
Georgia Power has said that the utility rate hike is just one of four that they plan to request over the next several years. Georgia Power claims the rate hike is necessary.
The increase is needed to strengthen the utility’s electric grid, add more renewable energy to its power-generation portfolio and improve customer service, Chris Womack, Georgia’s Power’s chairman, president, and CEO testified Tuesday.
The Georgia Public Service Commission heard testimony this week about the rate hike. Customers testified that they cannot afford the rate hike that would increase utility bills as much as $17 per month with the first requested rate hike. If Georgia Power gets their way with the additional rate hikes, customers could see their bills go up over $50 a month over the next four years.
