In an article last week The Atlanta Journal Constitution revealed that not one resident of Georgia has been hired to an assembly position at the new Volkswagen Plant in Chattanooga.  This despite the fact that Georgia leaders were hopeful that the plant would provide much need jobs for residents of North Georgia.

A spokesman for VW told reporters last week, "We’re hiring local (Tennessee) people because of the incentive that comes from the state."  The spokesman said that as the plant expands and will potentialy hire a second shift, some Georgia residents will be hired.  Also, to date no suppliers have located in Northwest Georgia.

In September of 2007, State Senator Jeff Mullis who also serves as the head of the region’s Joint Development Authority, said that a supplier was looking at Chattooga County as a potential site for a facility.

Mullis said last week, "We thought it would be different.  As VW expands and the economy improves, we’ll have an opportunity."
