Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton has some information about insurance fine letters being sent by the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

A batch of insurance fine letters was mailed recently. Those letters are auto-generated from the Georgia DMV. You receive this notice when your insurance company notifies the DMV that insurance is no longer active on your vehicle.

Hampton says, “Please look closely at the vehicle description. If you no longer own the vehicle, go online to cancel your tag or notify us of the date you sold/traded/parked the vehicle so we can cancel your tag. If you are still driving the vehicle listed on the notice, CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY and ask that they re-submit your policy to the Georgia database. If the policy wasn’t submittted and received, you will receive one of these letters and your license plate can be suspended as it will appear that you are driving without insurance, regardless of what your card says.”
