Last week, the City of Summerville declined to renew a contract with current City Manager Janice Galloway.  Galloway said that she was not expecting that move by the city council.  Now, the council will begin their search for an interim city manager and then someone to fill the roll in a permanent position.

Galloway was the third city manager for Summerville in the past twelve years. Galloway took over the position of Summerville City Manager after the death of Tony Carroll in 2018.  Both Carroll and Galloway were longtime employees of the city before assuming the roll of city manager.  Before Mr. Caroll’s appointment, the city manager position belonged to Russell Thompson.  Thompson took over the position in February of 2010.

Thompson was from Gray, Georgia and had no connections with Summerville or Chattooga County.  He served as a city councilman in Gray and then was city manager for Milledgeville, Georgia.  Thompson worked as Summerville City Manager for about five and one-half years before returning to the Macon metro area.

It remains to be seen if the council will choose to look outside the area for a new city manager, or if they will choose someone with knowledge of the city and the area in their selection.
