The property tax deadline is December 1st, but Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that she is going to give a grace period for those needing to get their property taxes paid.

Hampton told WZQZ News on Wednesday that a number of factors played into her decision to not start assessing any interest or penalties right away.  For one thing, the tax commissioners office is undergoing major repairs.  The office was hit hard during the Labor Day Weekend Flood earlier this year.  The contractors hired to do the electrical work showed up this week.  Tax Commissioner Hampton says that along with the fact her office is closed on Wednesdays – the day before taxes were due – prompted her to let Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry know on Wednesday that she wouldn’t be counting tax payments “late” until Monday, December 12, 2022.

Hampton told WZQZ News that her office had collected $3.3 million in property taxes since Monday of this week – which is around 60% of the total.  She added that she hopes to have around 74% of the taxes collected by the end of this week.

Again, if you still owe your property taxes, you will have until the end of the day on Friday, December 9th to get those property taxes paid in person with no penalty.  You can pay your taxes online at the tax commissioner’s website HERE Remember, there is a processing fee for online and in-person credit card payments.

Tax Commissioner Hampton says her office will accept payments postmarked by December 11th as being paid on time if you choose to mail in your payment.
