With overnight temperatures predicted to be in the single digits as we head into Christmas weekend, now is the time to prepare.  One thing you don’t want to forget is your vehicle.

Anything lower than 32 degrees can cause issues for your engine in terms of performance. If you sense the weather dropping, it is a good idea to start your car and let the engine run idle for a couple minutes to ensure that everything is working properly.

Antifreeze/coolant keeps your engine cool in warm weather and keeps it from freezing up in the winter. A 50-50 mix of full strength coolant and water generally protects to around -30 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you check your owner’s manual for the correct formulation. Engine coolant does more than protect your engine from freezing and cracking. Coolant also contains anti-corrosive additives and water-pump lubricants to keep your entire cooling system in tip-top shape.

As the outside temperature drops, so does tire inflation pressure. Make sure each tire is filled to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure, which is in your owner’s manual and on a label located on the driver’s side door frame.

Don’t forget to check you battery as well. Cold temperatures put severe stress on your battery, which is why the winter season is often when many batteries get replaced.  If you don’t have the means to test your own battery, most auto parts stores offer that service.
