On Wednesday morning, the Chattooga County Registrars Office posted a notice on social media saying “due to unforeseen circumstance” their office would be “closed until further notice”. 

WZQZ News spoke with Chattooga County Probate Judge Gary Woods who said that the heating system in the registrars office failed and there was no heat in the building.  According to the probate judge, the unit will have to be replaced.

The office is located in the former McGinnis Drug Store building at 10017 Commerce Street, just south of the Chattooga County Courthouse.  The heating and cooling system in the building has been patched up multiple times over the past several years, but now it appears the system will have to be replaced.

The aging building sits next to another county-owned building that used to house the Chattooga County Extension Office. The building that was once the Fuller Jewelry Store, was in need of extensive renovation and repair and their had been many costly repairs to the heating and cooling system in that building over the past several years.   The extension office vacated the Commerce Street building in 2018 and moved to its new location at the Chattooga County Agricultural Building off Highway 100 in Summerville.

No date has been given as to when the registrars office will reopen.
