Legislation expanding Georgia’s bullying law to include text messages and social media sites is being co-sponsored by State Representative Barbara Massey Reece (D-Menlo).  Reece said that the purpose of the bill is to deter bullying sent by cell phones and computers.

The legislation would prohibit students from bullying by sending texts or e-mailing on a cell phone on school property or designated school places — including bus stops and school functions. It would also prohibit bullying through social media sites when such acts could affect the academic environment or are directed specifically at another student or school personnel.

Reece said that children in Georgia should be protected in and out of the classroom.
