For several years trains have not rolled down the tracks between Summerville and Lyerly – but that will all change in the near future.  The Chattooga and Chickamauga Railroad that runs from Chattanooga to Summerville is expected to re-open several miles of track between Summerville and Lyerly thanks to funds from the Georgia D.O.T.

Repairs are slated for the rail road throughout Chattooga County.  According to the Georgia Department of Transportation the following repairs are scheduled for Wilson Road and Ridgeway Road grade crossings.  The plan also calls for grade crossings to be re-opened on Back Berryton Road, Berryton Road, Dovers Cut Road, Georgia Highway 114 and McLeod Street along with Alpine Street in Lyerly.

Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters said that the repairs are exciting because trains will once again roll into the Summerville Depot.  Also Winters said that the repair of the rail road to Lyerly means the possibility of excursion train rides from Summerville to Lyerly.

In all the D.O.T. is slated to replace 17,000 cross ties during the work between Lyerly, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
