A bill that would have pushed the weight limit on commercial vehicles from 80,000 lbs to 90,000 lbs in Georgia has met with strong opposition from local governments across the state that worry heavier weight limits for over the road trucks would lead to damage to roads and bridges.

State Senator Colton Moore, who represents Chattooga, Walker, Dade and Catoosa Counties and is the chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, had offered an amendment to the bill that would have required an extra axle to distribute the weight on large trucks.

The bill passed the committee, but was sent back to the committee for reconsideration after county commissioners and others across the state voiced their opposition, saying the bill would cause problems for local road departments and cause the Georgia DOT to divert funds from new projects.

The committee started over with the bill and approved a version that will only allow the heavier weight limits for agricultural shipping, and only if the truck is traveling within 250 miles from the farm or processing facility where the load originates.
