Homeowners in Georgia have until April 1st to register for homestead tax exemption, and Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that those who have not filed for homestead tax exemption will want to get that done, as the Georgia legislature is considering property tax breaks for Georgia homeowners.

Governor Brian Kemp has asked the Georgia General Assembly to consider a tax break for homeowners that could mean several hundred dollars in savings – but only if your primary residence has a homestead tax exemption.  The legislation could save homeowners up to $400 off their property tax bills.

You can file homestead tax exemption any time of the year in Georgia, but the exemption must be in place by April 1st in order for the exemption to apply for the current tax year.
