A handful of Georgia senators that wanted to legalize sports betting in the Peach State had their bill shot down this week in the Georgia Senate as anti-gambling senators joined forces with others who believed an attempt to legalize sports betting without it going before voters was unconstitutional.

The bill’s supporters said that online sports betting wasn’t the same as casinos and was more like the Georgia Lottery, which voters have already approved.  But thirty-seven Democrats and Republicans disagreed with the nineteen supporters of the bill and voted the measure down.

Sports betting and casinos have been the topic for the General Assembly for several years as some Republican leaders continue to push for the measures in Georgia.
