State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) has worked closely with Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King on a bill that would close a loophole in a Georgia law that has allowed some car insurance companies to bypass the insurance commissioner’s office and hike rates as much as 40%.

The legislation would give the insurance commissioner’s office additional authority over rate filings in order to protect Georgia consumers from exorbitant price increases, according to Commissioner John King’s office.

Last year, Commissioner King released a statement saying he was “angry and disappointing” that Allstate Insurance chose to “exploit” a loophole in Georgia law in order to increase car insurance rates.

Rep. Lumsden, who operates an insurance agency in Armuchee with his wife, introduced House Bill 221 to close the loophole in Georgia law.
