The Summerville City Council is moving forward with plans to contract with a non-profit organization to provide youth wrestling for the Summerville Recreation Department.  The move comes after Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey vetoed a measure that would have donated money to Summerville Youth Wrestling.

Late last year, Mayor Harvey told the council that the donation that they had been giving for many years was “illegal” and that he would veto the measure.  The council voted to donate the money anyway, with only Councilman David Ford siding with the mayor.  Harvey promptly vetoed the measure saying he was acting on the advice of the Summerville city attorney.

Now the council has approved a measure that would contract with an organization to provide youth wrestling as a service to the city’s recreation department.  According to the notice posted by the city, the organization must be a 501-c3 nonprofit and have a “history of provider and resources” along with qualified and experienced personnel.

The move by the council to contract the services is a way they believe they can legally allow the Summerville Youth Wrestling organization to continue the work they have done over many years and get around the mayor’s objections.
