Counties and municipalities across Georgia could see millions of dollars returned to the local coffers if the Senate approves a bill that was passed by the Georgia House last week.

House Bill 256 calls for fees on prepaid wireless purchases — 75 cents for all but the smallest purchases — be split among the state’s 911 centers based on the population served.  According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution more than $28 million has been diverted to the state’s general fund instead of going to local 911 centers.

Commissioner Jason Winters said that Chattooga County could expect to see over $40,000 a year from the fees.
