The Coosa Valley Chapter of Habitat for Humanity serves Floyd, Polk and Chattooga Counties by providing housing for Northwest Georgia residents who are unable to buy a home through existing affordable housing options, but who are able to make consistent mortgage payments and who are willing to become a working partner with Habitat for Humanity.
The Christian organization is made up of volunteers from many faith traditions, but find a common goal in sharing God’s love and in their commitment to providing housing to those willing to put in “sweat equity” to obtain a new home.
The organization was founded in southwest Georgia in the mid 1970’s and received worldwide acclaim when a busload of people from southwest Georgia showed up in New York City to revitalize tenement housing in 1984. The group slept in a church basement and worked for a week on the project – among those on that busload of people were former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
The Carter’s involvement with the organization provided attention to the organization’s mission and through the years Habitat has been able to provide homes for over 29 million people worldwide.
According to Habitat for Humanity – Coosa Valley Chapter:
Residents of Floyd, Chattooga and Polk counties who meet the basic requirements and income eligibility guidelines can apply. Habitat for Humanity – Coosa Valley serves families who are unable to buy a home through existing affordable housing options, but who are able to make consistent mortgage payments and who are willing to become a working partner with Habitat for Humanity – Coosa Valley. A Habitat home is a hand up, not a hand out.
In order to become a homeowner, qualifying families work side by side with volunteers during construction, renovations and repairs to cut cost and then families must repay the cost of building their home with a no interest charge. 100 % of the mortgage payments go back towards the funding of future houses.
