A Georgia inmate managed to steal $11 million by impersonating a billionaire.
Thirty-one-year-old Arthur Lee Cofield, Jr., a gang member who is serving 14 years for armed robbery, used contraband cell phones to impersonate California billionaire Sidney Kimmel and opened a bank account in the billionaire’s name. Cofield then arranged for the money to be wired from the billionaire’s investment account to the fraudulent account. He then purchased a $4.4 million house in Buckhead.
A limited amount of information has been publicly reported about the conspiracy case since the Justice Department first announced in December 2020 that Cofield and two co-conspirators on the outside, Eldridge Bennett and his daughter Eliayah Bennett, had been indicted for stealing $11 million. All three have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and money laundering.
