A new survey from the AARP Fraud Watch Network shows many in Georgia and the nation believe fraud has hit a crisis level. The scammers are using phone calls and texts to scam people – especially seniors.
To avoid becoming a victim of a scam, anytime you receive a phone call or text that’s out of the blue, and it puts you in a heightened emotional state – disengage immediately. Sophisticated criminal enterprises commit fraud daily against consumers in Georgia and elsewhere, stealing billions of dollars annually. The financial losses are exorbitant. Staying informed on what to expect is critical. Kathy Stokes, Director of Fraud Prevention Programs at AARP, says reporting the scam to the Federal Trade Commission and knowing about scams helps.
Stokes added, “If you’ve been targeted by scams or fraud, you are not alone. Our trained fraud specialists provide support and guidance on what to do next and how to avoid scams in the future. The AARP Fraud Helpline, 877-908-3360, is free and available to anyone. We also offer online support sessions for further emotional support”.
