Social media has been abuzz with posts about owners of off-road all terrain vehicles being able to purchase a tag to drive them on roads in Georgia, but Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered.
House Bill 121 was signed into law and will go into effect on July 1, 2023. Owners of the off-road vehicles can apply for a license plate to operate on county road systems. The vehicle will be required to have headlights, brake lights, tail lights and seat belts. There are some other caveats. The vehicles must be manufactured after January 1, 2000 and they must be 80-inches or less in width.
Tax Commissioner Hampton said that the vehicles will only be legal on county roads with a posted speed of 35 mph or less. She added, that the state still has not given local tag offices all of the details and that it isn’t clear if golf carts will be included. Tags will cost $20.
Hampton said that guidance from the Georgia Motor Vehicle Division on how to process the registrations is forthcoming.
