Pleasant Hill UMC – West Armuchee Road, Summerville
While some Methodists churches in Chattooga County have already left the United Methodist denomination, others are contemplating the move. This comes after a meeting of the North Georgia Conference of United Methodists last week.
Already, several rural Methodist churches in Chattooga County have disaffiliated from the conference. Most of the historically African-American Methodist churches in the county have voted to leave the United Methodist Church, and Oak Hill Methodist Church in Lyerly has already completed the disaffiliation process.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution had an article on Sunday that quoted the pastor of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church on West Armuchee Road. Rev. Sharon Coley told the newspaper that she and her church plans to stay in the denomination. ( AJC Story )
Meanwhile, Lyerly United Methodist Church has a vote scheduled for members to determine if they will stay or go. According to the church’s Facebook page, the vote will be held this coming Sunday, June 11th.
The AJC reported that around 40% of United Methodist Churches in Georgia have either voted to leave the denomination, or are planning to do so. In North Georgia, Methodist Churches have until June 30th to vote to disaffiliate.
