A 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 from Menlo, Georgia has found a new home in Portland, United Kingdom. The new owner told WZQZ News a fascinating story about a car that was sold at Bremp Warren Ford in Summerville and now is turning heads in the U.K.
Kris Haskins from Portland, United Kingdom posted on a Menlo community Facebook page after he purchased the car in hopes of finding more out about its history. He said that he was a little hesitant at first, but since then so many people have commented on the post.
Haskins spoke with WZQZ News on Wednesday afternoon. Haskins said that he found the car about 70 miles from his home and that when he saw it he “couldn’t walk away” and “just had to have it”. Haskins says that he has had a long fascination with American cars and before the 1963 Galaxie, he owned a 1994 Camaro. He told WZQZ, “I’m somewhat of a rockabilly and love all things 50’s and 60’s”.
Haskins said that the car was sold to someone in Alabama and in Florida before it made its trip across to the U.K.
The car still sports a “Warren – Summerville, GA” sticker from where the car was purchased in Chattooga County in 1963. Bremp Warren, now 99, operated Bremp Warren Ford for decades before retiring. The car was sold originally to Myrtle Crowe of Menlo. The original paperwork was still in the dash when Haskins purchased the vehicle in the U.K. Haskins said that Ms. Crowe ordered the car with custom vinyl seat covers that were still on the seats, but had began to deteriorate. When he removed the cracking seat covers, the seats were still in remarkable condition. Haskins said that it appears that the car had been in an accident at some point and the passenger-side door has been replaced. He also said that there is a bit of rust on the driver’s side but discovered the rust spot fits perfectly with someone resting their arm with the window down.
Haskins says that he replaced the headliner and the carpet in the car, but doesn’t plan to do any type of major restoration. Speaking of the replaced door and rust spot where the driver’s elbow rested, Haskins told WZQZ he plans to leave those alone. Haskins said, “Those are the history of the car to me”.
Haskins says the car is very popular at car events in the U.K. This weekend the former Chattooga County car is headed to a “steam and vintage” show in the U.K.
Mr. Haskins told WZQZ he is fifty-six-years-old and has been married to his wife, Sharon, for thirty-two years. The couple has three grown sons and four grandchildren with another on the way. He currently works for the regional electric company in Portland.
