Summerville Police responded to two separate dog bite reports recently.

The first was on Vine Street and police responded after a woman called 911 to report that a juvenile had been bitten by a dog.  The child required medical treatment at a Rome hospital.  Police were unable to locate the owner of the dog, identified in the report as Annie Johnson of a Hawkins Street address.  A nurse at Atrium Health Floyd in Rome advised Summerville Police that the dog would need to be picked up and quarantined to make sure that it didn’t have rabies.  Chattooga County Animal Control was able to locate and impound the dog.

A second incident involving dogs was reported to Summerville Police on Woodland Avenue.  A sixty-year-old man said that two dogs approached him – one was a black Pitbull and the other a brown and white bulldog.  The bulldog bit at the man’s pants leg and he pulled out a pocket knife in an attempt to defend himself.  At the point, the owner of the dogs called for them to come back in the house. A police report identified the owner as Heaven Carmen.  The owner of the dogs told police that the dogs were housedogs, and that they were not up to date on their shots.  Police issued the woman a citation for violation of the leash law and Chattooga County Animal Control told the woman she would have to get the dogs vaccinated or they would be impounded.
