Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton recorded a video on Thursday and posted it to the Chattooga County Tax Commissioner’s Facebook Page HERE about the tax assessments that were mailed out and arrived in mailboxes across the county this week.
The tax commissioner is reminding county property owners that her office does NOT send out the tax assessments. That is the job of the Chattooga County Tax Assessors Office, located in the same building as the tax commissioner. However, the assessors office is a totally separate entity of county government and does not work for – or with – the tax commissioner’s office. Their job is to assess property values; the tax commissioner’s job is to collect taxes.
There are two taxing authorities in the county – the county sole commissioner and the Chattooga Board of Education. The tax commissioner does not set the tax rate for the county. That is done by the commissioner and the board of education when they set the millage rate. The millage rate for this year has not been set by either the commissioner or the board of education.
