One of the joys of summertime in the Peach State is sweet Georgia Peaches, but due to a disastrous year for Georgia’s peach farmers, the state’s fruit is almost impossible to find in supermarkets and roadside produce stands.
The Federal government has stepped in to help ease the pain for the peach producers in middle Georgia – the largest peach-growing region in the state.
Locally, most of the peaches we are finding in the supermarket are coming from South Carolina or California. California actually leads the nation in peach production and South Carolina comes in second, with the Peach State coming in third-place in overall peach production.
Here in Chattooga County, the Chattooga County 4-H program normally sells peaches from Dickey’s Farms in Mucella, Georgia as a fundraiser, but due to the bad peach year, that fundraiser wasn’t able to be held.
What few Georgia peaches that are available have increased in price from around $20 a box to around $40 a box.
