Enrollment is dropping at UGA’s College of Education. Officials say fewer students are choosing careers in teaching, leading to a 15-percent decline in enrollment. Eleven Alive reports that nationwide, the number of students earning degrees in education fell from 105,000 twenty-three-years ago to 85,00 in 2020.  To make matters worse, a 2015 report by the Georgia Department of Education revealed that 44 % of public school teachers left the classrooms within the first five years on the job. Experts say the COVID-19 pandemic also magnified issues that many potential teachers already had, like wages.
