Over 1,000 Chattooga County property owners have filed appeals after getting their property tax assessments in the mail several weeks ago. Just how all those tax appeals are going to be heard remains to be seen, but the tax process is likely to be slowed down. The county still has to get its tax digest approved by state officials and the county commissioner and board of education has to set millage rates before tax bills can be mailed.
Despite efforts to educate the public on how the county property tax system works, their is still some confusion in the minds of some. While the tax commissioner’s name appears on the tax bill, the tax commissioner’s office does not determine property values, set millage rates or determine how much tax each property owner will pay. The tax commissioner’s job is to submit the tax digest to the state and to send out tax bills and then collect taxes once those bills are sent.
Just when those bills go out could cause funding issues for county government and the local school system as the year draws to a close.
