Hundreds of people turned out for a tax assessment town hall meeting last month and they, along with several hundred more Chattooga County tax payers have flooded the local tax assessors with tax appeals.
The deadline to appeal taxes was on Monday of this week, and reports indicate that there were over 3,000 tax appeals filed by the deadline. That is a record number, according to local tax officials.
How the local tax assessors deal with all those appeals will affect when the county’s tax digest can be finalized and when tax bills will be sent out. When those tax bills go out determines the due date for property taxes.
Also, Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry and the Chattooga Board of Education will have to set the millage rate to determine how much taxes will be.
