Floyd County Police have charged a forty-six-year-old truck driver from Birmingham, Alabama with vehicular homicide in connection with a wreck that killed a LaFayette man on a motorcycle near Armuchee High School on Monday morning.
Police say that Tony Orlando McFarland was driving the tractor trailer when it struck the motorcycle being driven by thirty-four-year-old Kyle Holladay of LaFayette. Police say that the truck driver was following behind the motorcycle “closer than reasonable or prudent” and that led to him striking the motorcycle and killing Holladay. The truck driver then left the scene of the wreck.
McFarland is charged with felony vehicular homicide, hit and run involving serious injury or death and misdemeanor following too closely. He remained in jail without bond as of Monday afternoon.
The fatal wreck occurred just a few minutes after another wreck involving a pickup truck in the same area. The driver of the pickup lost control and left the roadway striking the guide wire for a utility pole. The wreck knocked wires down across the roadway.
Highway 27 was closed in the area of the accidents for several hours on Monday morning.
