The train will return to Summerville today as the City of Summerville hosts Sum Nelly at Dowdy Park.  The annual arts and crafts festival gets underway at 9 AM and there will be plenty of arts, crafts and food vendors on hand.  When the train arrives this afternoon, you can witness the engine being turned on the historic turntable located at Dowdy Park.

In 2003, the city of Summerville installed a turntable at Dowdy Park, allowing the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) Steam Passenger Trains to turn locomotives for the return trip to Chattanooga. This also allowed them to begin operating trips with just the steam engines on the train, as before this table was installed, a diesel locomotive would pull the return trip, dragging the steam engine in reverse.
Summerville’s turntable is 100 feet long, and was built by the American Bridge Company (the same company that built our turntable at East Chattanooga) in 1918. It originally served the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and later CSX at Boyles Yard in Birmingham, Alabama. You can see this table in use today as the they spin the locomotive on it for the return trip to Chattanooga.
The train is expected to arrive around 1 PM this afternoon at the Historic Summerville Depot.
