In normal times, Chattooga County property owners would have already received their property tax bills in the mail and the bills would have come due around the first of December, but this year has been anything but normal for Chattooga County property taxes.

With a record number of property tax appeals the property tax process has been delayed, which means that property taxes won’t be due the first of December, and Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that she will try her best to make sure taxes don’t come due the week of Christmas.

Yesterday, the Chattooga Board of Assessors presented the tax commissioner with numbers to work with so that she can begin to put in her system.  Tax Commissioner Hampton says that she will try to have those numbers entered and be able to present them to the county’s two taxing authorities – the Chattooga Board of Education and Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Blake Elsberry – so that they can set millage rates by the end of the month.

Tax Commissioner Hampton told WZQZ News on Wednesday afternoon, “If all goes well I can have the digest done some time in December and get bills out in late December. I’ll try my best to avoid having tax bills hit the week of Christmas”.
