Managing breast health is important, no matter your age. An interactive website from Atrium Health Floyd is an ideal way for women to learn more about taking control of their breast health — from their 20s to their 60s and beyond.

The website, sayknow.floyd.org, allows a user to choose three breast health topics that are important to them or that they have questions about. Topic includes preventive care, breast pain, mammograms, clinical breast exams and genetic testing.

Based on their choices, users will receive a Personal Power Summary to help them understand optimal breast health at every stage of life and determine their own personal breast cancer risk.

This knowledge will empower women to “say know to breast cancer” for a lifetime.

“We use the phrase ‘say know to breast cancer,’” said Aimee Griffin, vice president of Professional Services at Atrium Health Floyd and former director of The Breast Center at Atrium Health Floyd. “For me that really defines how knowledge — the presence of knowledge or absence of knowledge — can impact a woman’s ability to not only understand her breast health but also be in control of her breast health.

“We see the impact and the power that knowledge can have, so when you understand what’s normal and what’s not normal, it really puts you in a position to take control of your health and be an advocate for yourself as a patient,” Griffin added.

That knowledge can be extended to ensure that other women are getting the type of care they need.

Women in their 30s should get a clinical breast exam every one to three years. In their 40s women should add an annual screening mammogram to their annual clinical breast exam.

Women in their 50s, 60s and beyond should continue to receive annual screening mammograms and clinical breast exams. If you have any questions or concerns, always ask your health care provider.

The Breast Center at Atrium Health Floyd first opened its doors in 2008, setting a new standard for providing quality screening diagnostic care in a timely manner.

“The whole idea of knowing the results of your mammogram within a day is huge. For many women, the anxiety that comes from having to wait for results can be one of the worst parts of the process,” Griffin said.
