The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported this past week that a conservative organization is eyeing school board races in Georgia and wants to see more candidates campaign on issues of parental rights. Moms for Liberty has just five chapters in Georgia, and one of those is in Chattooga County.
The AJC reported that Moms for Liberty held a town hall meeting in Duluth to give parents a chance to speak with Republican legislators. A crowd of about 50 people participated in a wide-ranging conversation that touched on hot topics in education, including the content of library books, divisive concepts in the classroom, reading instruction, school choice and social emotional learning.
Moms for Liberty, founded in early 2021 by conservative women in Florida, has quickly expanded its presence across the country. It has landed national media attention for its efforts — sometimes successful — to fight COVID safety measures in schools, ban books, limit discussion about race and LGBTQ identities and populate local school boards with conservatives.
Some, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, have labeled the organization as extremist (NPR Report). Speaking about the organization, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten says, “(Voters) don’t want culture wars; they want safe and welcoming public schools where their kids can recover and thrive”.
Moms for Liberty is relatively new to Georgia but trying to expand. The organization’s website lists five chapters in the state: Chattooga, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall and Oconee counties.
