Trion City Schools is looking to do a facelift and provide some additional shelter for students at the elementary and middle schools while they are being dropped off in the mornings and picked up in the afternoons.

School Supt. Dr. Phil Williams told WZQZ news that the proposed new awning will accomplish both purposes – serving as an additional shelter and giving the building a facelift.  The school building was built almost twenty-eight years ago and Dr. Williams says that they were looking at a way to spruce up the entrance of the building.  The new awning being proposed will not only add to the aesthetics of the building, it will allow for quicker drop-off and pickup times for parents transporting their children to and from the school.

Right now, when the weather is bad, students are kept in the cafeteria and school employees use a handheld radio to call students out to be picked up in the afternoons.  Dr. Williams says that with the new awning, students will be provided shelter and be ready to be picked up by their parents.

The school superintendent says that the new awning will be paid for by SPLOSTS funds.  He added that Trion City Schools has been frugal with their funds and has been able to invest some money into CD’s which are paying a better return than they used to.  Dr. Williams added that the money for the upgrade was available and will be going to a good use.
