You may be “dreaming of a White Christmas”, but the likelihood of having snow on Christmas Day in Northwest Georgia is very slim; not only this year, but most years.

The last time Chattooga County saw snow on the ground for Christmas was in 2010 with a few inches of snow that gave many area residents their first memory of a truly “White Christmas.”

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia, the average temperatures for Northwest Georgia on Christmas Day is in the mid to upper 40’s.  The coldest Christmas on record came back in 1983 when temperatures were only in the teens on Christmas Day.  There have been several Christmases where the temperatures were in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.

The National Weather Service says in their 2023 Christmas Climatology Report, “Even though some Christmases have been very cold in our area, snow on Christmas is extremely unusual. A trace of snow has only been recorded a handful of times at climate reporting sites in Georgia since record keeping began. The most recent and significant snowfall on Christmas Day was back in 2010”.

As far as other significant winter weather occurring on Christmas, an ice storm occurred in 1962 and affected parts of north and east Georgia.

While a lot can change in a week’s time, the weather outlook for Christmas Day – one week from today – shows a chance of rain and high’s in the 60’s with lows in the mid 40’s.
