2023 was not a normal year for property taxes in Chattooga County.  With a record number of assessment appeals from Chattooga County taxpayers, tax bills did not go out to property owners in the early fall, and did not begin arriving in mailboxes until the end of December.

Normally, taxes are due the first of December, but because of the delay in getting tax bills out caused by the property tax appeals, 2023 property taxes are not due until March 1, 2024.

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that despite the fact that property tax bills just recently arrived, over 30% of the taxes have already been collected.  Hampton said last week there were 2,285 tax bills paid that totaled almost $2.5 million.

The tax office was closed yesterday because of the New Year’s Holiday and reopens today.
