Work begins today to stabilize boulders on Dougherty Gap Road on Lookout Mountain.  The road winds up the east side of the mountain and is used by residents in Walker and Chattooga Counties as a route to LaFayette. 

The road is located about two and one-half miles north of the Chattooga / Walker County line and turns off of Georgia Highway 157.

Back in November, a rock slide prompted Walker County officials to close the road.  It’s not the first time the road has been closed for long periods of time due to rock and mud slides.  In 2022, the road was closed for months after heavy rains prompted a landslide.  In 2010, Walker County used funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to repair the road after severe flooding in 2009.

Walker County officials say that GeoStabilization International will be working to release cracked boulders in the area where the falling rocks landed. Also, existing boulders will be bolted to secure the rock mass from future incidents.

The work is expected to take 3-4 weeks to complete.
