Heavy rains moved through the area overnight and into the morning hours.  Reports from around Chattooga County today indicated that anywhere from 3.5 to close to 5 inches of rain fell which led to flooding problems.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia says a Flood Warning remains in place until 5:10 PM this afternoon and a Flood Watch remains in place until midnight.  Also, they have issued a Wind Advisory until 7 PM.  This afternoon, the National Weather Service added a Special Weather Statement saying the higher elevations of Chattooga County could see some snow showers this evening.  Any accumulation will be less than an inch.

The effects of the rain are still being felt across the county this afternoon as Public Works crews from county are dealing with downed trees and bad road conditions.  Blowing Springs Road in Menlo was flooded with debris across the roadway and Public Works crews were on the scene cleaning up the storm damage.  Earlier today, a power line came down in the Spring Creek area which prompted officials to detour traffic in the area.

Multiple roads and city streets had standing water, but Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas says that recent work by the Town of Trion in Park Avenue helped alleviate the flooding.  The mayor told WZQZ News that the area appeared to be draining well during today’s heavy rains.  There were some flooding issues in the Simmons Street area earlier this morning.

Power outages have been reported, but they have not been widespread.  As of 2:30 this afternoon, a power outage was being reported off Kansas Drive which is located off Stoleman Road in Trion.  The outage is affecting less than five customers but is not expected to be resolved until 11:30 tonight. Another power outage off Sloppy Floyd Lake Road is affecting around 10 customers and Georgia Power has not given an estimated time for restoration, saying they are “reassessing” the situation.  A third Georgia Power outage is being reported just past the Chattooga River Bridge on Highway 100.  It is affecting around seven Georgia Power customers, and they are reassessing that outage as well.  A fourth outage is reported on Jenkins Gap and is affecting five customers.  The restoration time for that outage is 11:30 PM.  A fifth outage, and the most widespread, is in the Holland area where sixty-two Georgia Power Customers are without power.  That restoration time has been listed as 5:30 PM.  North Georgia EMC is not reporting any outages in Chattooga County.
