After nearly five inches of rain was reported on Tuesday and some light snow showers and reports of some sleet on Tuesday night, we are waking up to temperatures in the mid to upper 30’s in the valley and hovering around freezing in the higher elevations of the area. As of 4:15 AM WZQZ News has not been notified of any school or business closings or delays.  A Flood Warning for the Chattooga River has been extended by the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday night, the Flood Warning for the Chattooga River in Chattooga County was extended from 5:10 PM to 9:24 PM tonight.  Flood stage at the gauge located on Highway 27 (Rome Boulevard), near The Summerville News office, is 14 feet.  The river is expected to crest at 17 feet later today.  At 3:15 AM the flood stage was at 16.42 feet.  According to the National Weather Service, “At 17.0 feet, moderate flooding begins. The flooding expands further into the woodlands and fields along the river upstream and downstream from the gage on U.S. Highway 27, or Rome Boulevard. And the low portions of the parking lot by the river at Mount Vernon Mills in Trion begin to flood. Near Lyerly portions of Lyerly Dam Road near the river begin to flood”.

Today, we are looking for mostly cloudy skies and a high in the mid to upper 40’s.  More rain is expected by Friday, with a chance of rain changing to snow showers overnight and into Saturday morning.

Some good news is that all Georgia Power customers in Chattooga County have had their power restored.  There were no widespread outages reported on Tuesday, with the largest outage being in the Holland area.  Georgia Power continues to work on several power outages in neighboring Floyd County.
