The Dollar General store located on Commerce Street was closed earlier this month after a portion of the roof collapsed in the receiving area.  The store, located in the old Piggly Wiggly building at the corner of Kelly Street is one of several Dollar General’s operated in Chattooga County, but the store being closed is making it difficult on some area residents.

Local employees of Dollar General tell WZQZ News that the store on Commerce Street had a large amount of foot traffic as opposed to stores located elsewhere in the county.  The store being close to downtown meant that people without vehicles could easily access the store.  It is also the closest place to get groceries and daily essentials for people living in the Summerville High Rise Apartments.

According to the latest U.S. Census numbers, almost 6% of the households in Chattooga County do not have vehicles.  That would account for around 520 households and around 1,300 people without access to a car.

Dollar General Corporation has not provided a timeline for when the store will reopen.
