The Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed on Monday morning that the state trooper who died in the line of duty on Sunday afternoon was attempting to stop a motorcycle for a traffic violation on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County when the fatal crash occurred.
The trooper was identified as Jimmy Cenescar, who had been with the department for a year and was a graduate of the 114th Trooper School.
“The Georgia Department of Public Safety is saddened to announce the line-of-duty death of Trooper Jimmy Cenescar #436,” a social media post by the Department of Public Safety said. “On January 28, 2024, Trooper Cenescar was attempting to stop a motorcycle for a traffic violation on Interstate 85 North near Old Peachtree Road, in Atlanta. Trooper Cenescar’s vehicle left the roadway and struck an embankment.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and attempted life-saving measures. Trooper Cenescar was rushed to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, where he passed away.”
Few details have been released about the accident, which occurred Sunday afternoon and had all lanes of I-85 North near the Old Peachtree Rd. exit shut down for a lengthy period on Sunday.
At this time, no information about the motorcycle rider has been released.

On Sunday, the Georgia Department of Public Safety announced that a trooper had died in the line of duty but did not include any other information at that time.
