Legislation making its way through the Georgia General Assembly would change the City of Menlo’s charter and set up four-year staggered terms for the mayor and city council members. 

Menlo’s charter was re-written and passed by the General Assembly in 2011.  This amendment would result in a series of elections to begin the four-year staggered terms for the mayor and council members.  That means, if the bill passes, there would be new elections in November 2025 for the mayor and City Council Seats 1 and 2. Those terms, and all terms going forward, would be for four years. City Council Seats 3, 4 and 5 would go into the schedule with the November 2027 election.

To run for office in Menlo, a candidate must have been a resident for at least 12 months as of election day.

Elected officials are required to live within the city limits for the extent of their term.

House Bill 961, was submitted by State Rep. Eddie Lumsden last week, and is pending action in the House Intragovernmental Coordination Committee.
