The Cherokee County, Alabama Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of a body that was found late last month in Weiss Lake.

Fishermen reported what they believed to be a submerged vehicle in the lake on February 23rd.  The vehicle was discovered at Chesnut Bay, located southeast of Yellow Creek, between Jamestown and Leesburg.   The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded and discovered that the vehicle submerged in the lake was registered to Oscar Lewis King, who was reported missing from Cherokee County in late 2013. King, who was in his early seventies at the time of his disappearance, was a native of Texas.  His family reported him missing on December 2, 2013.

This past week, Cherokee County Coroner Paul McDonald, in conjunction with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences,  made identification of the human remains recovered from the lake.  The body was confirmed to be Oscar Lewis King.  It appears King accidentally drove into the water off the boat ramp located at Chesnut Bay Resort near Leesburg. According to Cherokee County Chief Deputy Josh Summerford, no foul play is suspected.

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver said, “We are thankful that the case is now resolved and the family can gain closure in knowing what happened”.
