U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced she has secured just over $3.8 million in federal funding for the runway extension at Richard B. Russell Regional Airport in Floyd County. The Rome Republican also netted earmarks for smaller projects in Gordon, Dade, Whitfield, Paulding and Cobb counties in the Fiscal Year 24 budget signed into law Saturday by President Joe Biden.
Floyd County voters approved funding for the runway extension in the 2013 special purpose, local option sales tax package. However, bids for the project came in far over the budgeted amount. Officials spent years working on ways to lower the cost, doing parts of the project piecemeal and seeking additional funds.
In February, the county commission awarded a $6.9 million contract to Bartow Paving Co. for the bulk of the remaining work. The new award of $3,803,000 will offset the $2.4 million budget increase the contract required.
