Lauren Elsberry penned an opinion article that was published in the Atlanta Journal Constitution last week.  Elsberry, is a registered nurse and the wife of Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry.  She is also one of the founding members of the Moms For Liberty group in Chattooga County.  Elsberry’s article focuses on the desire of some for state tax dollars to be used for private education.

In the article, Elsberry says that she and Commissioner Elsberry are not sending their child to public school in Chattooga County, but have instead, opted for a private Christian school in Walker County.  Elsberry cites fears of LBGTQ activities in the local school system as the reason.  Elsberry advocates for a bill that would divert public school funds and funnel them to parents who could use the money to send their children to private school.  In the article, Elsberry says “I work as a nursing instructor and my husband works in local government. We are not high-paid executives nor do we come from families with large amounts of generational wealth who can afford rising tuition. We also have a second child who will enter school in a few years. We would like the opportunity to use some of our education tax dollars designated for our children to pay for the education we, as parents, believe suits our children best”.

Moms for Liberty focuses on issues in local school systems across the nation that they say causes concerns for conservatives and have targeted teaching about Black history, literature and gender identity in public schools. Some civil rights organizations have identified Moms for Liberty as an extremist group.  Late last year, the national Moms for Liberty organization removed two chapter chairs after they were found to have connections with the neo-Nazi group “Proud Boys”.  Chapters of the organization have pushed to ban books on historical figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ruby Bridges.
