Next Friday March 29, 2024 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. VFW Post 6688 and the Auxiliary along with other veteran supporters will honor Vietnam Veterans with a program and lunch at 11:30am at the Chattooga County Memorial Home located at 818 Memorial Drive Summerville, GA.
Veterans who served during the Vietnam era from November 1, 1955 to April, 30, 1975 are considered Vietnam veterans whether they served in-country or at other supporting military posts around the world. All are invited to come and bring their families to this event as we honor those who served during those challenging years. Lunch will be served following the program.Special Guests will be Major General Thomas Carden, Adjutant General of Georgia, and Colonel Patricia Ross US Air Force, retired. Ross is the current Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service. Both will be speaking and presenting awards. Fourteen Vietnam veterans will receive Certificates of Honor from the State of Georgia and lapel pins from the US Department of Defense.As a gesture of appreciation to Major General Carden and Colonel Ross, each will be presented a Quilt of Valor for their service to our nation and state. Brenda Park and the local QOV group will conduct the ceremony.General Carden began his military career in 1986 when he enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard as an infantryman. Now the commander of the Georgia National Guard, he has held key positions in the US Army and the Guard. He was deployed to Bosnia during Operation Joint Forge and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.Commissioner Ross is a 25 year veteran of the US Air Force, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 2014. Throughout her career, she served in leadership positions at Air Force bases across the United States and in Germany and Italy. Her last assignment prior to retirement was serving as Vice Commander of the 78th Air Base Wing at Robbins Air Force Base in Georgia. She was appointed Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Service in 2021.
