The Georgia State Patrol has identified the two fatalities that happened in two separate, but related crashes on I-75 early Monday morning after a police chase by Calhoun Police and Gordon County Sheriff’s Deputies.
Calhoun Police initiated the chase after a report about a stolen vehicle at a gas station. The driver, later identified as sixteen-year-old Jonathan McEvers from LaFayette, fled the scene. The chase wound up on Interstate 75 where McEvers lost control of the vehicle he was driving after colliding with a deputy’s patrol vehicle. McEvers was ejected and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
That accident was the cause of a separate accident after two vehicles tried to avoid the crash between McEvers and the patrol vehicle. Thirty-three-year-old Michael Stout from Ohio was killed in that accident.
The Georgia State Patrol says that the crashes are still under investigation.
