A runoff election will be held on June 18th for the Chattooga County Coroner’s race. Four Republican candidates ran in the primary last week to replace retiring longtime Chattooga County Coroner Earl Rainwater.
Rainwater is the only Democrat serving in a constitutional office in Chattooga County. None of those four Republican candidates were able to garner 50% of the vote in order to win without a runoff. Now, Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney and Savanna McGill will face off during the runoff election.
The runoff race heated up over the weekend, with both candidates taking to social media.
McGill posted the results of several open records requests from neighboring counties’ coroners’ offices, which she says refutes McElhaney’s claims as to the extent of his experience. McElhaney contends that McGill’s findings were too broad in scope and do not give voters an honest picture of his experience working for coroners in Floyd and Walker Counties.

Meanwhile, voters who want to vote by absentee ballot have just ten days to request that absentee ballot, with the deadline being June 10, 2024.
