Northwest Georgia is seeing a rise in cases of syphilis and gonorrhea, which is being exacerbated by a significant increase in the cost of penicillin, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

“Across the 10 county Northwest Georgia health district, we are seeing anywhere from 2 to 20 new cases a week,” said Dr. Gary Voccio, the northwest health district director. “And although we have a good supply of penicillin, prices are up from 50 cents a dose to $7.50 a dose.”

The Rome News Tribune reported that Dr. Voccio spoke to the Floyd County Commission Tuesday night during their caucus. He also said he anticipates an increase in tuberculosis cases as immigrants come to the region.
