Georgia’s 53rd Senate District will have a contested race come November.  The district encompasses Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Chattooga and a portion of Floyd Counties.  Both the Republican incumbent and the Democratic challenger call Lookout Mountain home.

Incumbent State Senator Colton Moore from the New Salem area in Rising Fawn, is one of the most controversial politicians in Georgia.  An avid supporter of former President Donald Trump and anti-establishment Republican, he has been ousted by his fellow Republicans from their caucus in the Georgia Senate.  The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has banned Senator Moore from even coming on the House’s property.  Still, Moore remains extremely popular in Northwest Georgia.  In a contested Primary in May, Moore received over 70% of the vote and carried every county in the District.

A Chattooga County resident, Bart Bryant is the Democratic nominee for the district.  Bryant, who lives on Lookout Mountain at Cloudland, wants to change almost a quarter-century of GOP representation for the district. No Democrat has represented Northwest Georgia in the state senate since Sonny Hudgins lost to Jeff Mullis in 2000.  Bryant describes himself as ” (a) southern Democrat, working man, union member, former peace officer, and Proud American” Bryant says, “I know how to work with people, even if I don’t agree with them. Above all, I’ll bring respect back for the job and for the people as State Senator of District 53”.

Voters will be voting on the race in the General Election in November.
